When April First rolls around each year, I celebrate a birthday, for it was in 1919 on that day that I was born; the second of three sons to Dr. & Mrs. Willis Wild Bradstreet of Rochester, New York.

I don't recall my age at the time, but the earliest recollection I have of any kind of an earthly existance is the day that my father took me fishing for the first time. I can recall standing on a bridge over the outlet of Irondequoit Bay hoping for my first fish while my father told me about how all young people have their tonsils removed. Becoming more engrossed in his sales talk than fishing, I made my first real mistake by saying, "Let's get mine out." Still not realizing the fishing trip and the operative talk were all the part of a big, well laid plan, I left the "ole fishin' hole" with my father for a fast trip to his place of practice.

I don't recall entering the office or the conversation on the way. I do recall being surprised to find two other doctors waiting in their white coats and an operating table, all in readiness. And most of all, almost as though it happened yesterday, I can recall putting up the biggest fight any ether weilding doctor ever encountered!

From that time on, accounts are better remembered. Like some years later when my father took me to Canada on a fishing trip. No tonsil talk here, just plain fishing and "man talk" and a feeling of growing up. On our way to Buck Lake, I remember my father stopping at Gananoque. Here he bought a very large doll. I asked what it was for, and he explained that he had remembered a promise he had made to a little girl that he was treating back in Irondequoit, that he would get her a doll before he left for his fishing trip. He mailed it from Canada.

Although fishing remained a great love to me, I devided my time into whatever the great outdoors had to offer or to the sports in season. Besides hunting game birds, and animals, I spent my early years playing baseball, building model airplanes and enjoying summer days at my father's cottage on Canandaigua Lake. When 14 years old, I built a model airplane from my imagination which was a dead ringer of the stealth bomber of today. One difference, my plane was powered by a rubber band!

In 1934 I was enrolled at Staunton Military Acadamy in Virginia. While at the Acadamy, I played Varsity Baseball, was Captain of the Rifle Team, played Varsity soccer, joined the Silent Drill Team and the Woodrow Wilson Literary Society. My Baseball coach was Captain Howie who later became Major Howie who was killed while entering the City of St. Lo in France during World War II. A Hollywood movie would later be made of this event. The Commandant at SMA was Major Patch who later became General Patch. He was in charge of troops who took back several islands from the Japs.

In 1937 I graduated from the Acadamy after advancing from Private to a Second Lieutenant, passing all my subjects, pitching several baseball games, leading the rifle team to a couple of trophys and falling in love with Mary June Hagaman, who became my wife in 1939.

Mary June and I spent our honeymoon at the World's Fair in New York City. Arriving back in Point Pleasant, we lived with my parents for a while, later moving to an apartment on Culver Road. We later had a home built on Vosburg Road in Webster. This would be where we started bringing up our four children, Barbara (Boots), Richard Jr. (Richie), James (Jim Jim) and David (Charlie Brown).

One thing that comes natural for a fella in love is the desire for work and to build for the future. This desire led me to the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, New York. A month after filing my application for work, I was hired as an assistant, making water-proof liners for the shipment of photographic film overseas. For some odd reason this job brought out some hidden mechanical ability that I never knew I possessed. This ability advanced me to better jobs and more money. I retired from Kodak in 1979 with a technician rating. I was responsible for the design and building of experimental and prototype machines. Three patents at Kodak are under my name.

Highlights of marriage, of course, are the children that bless a home. Our marriage saw the birth of four children. Barbara, our only girl came first, although all preperations had been made for a boy. Blessed with beauty and common sense, Barbara today, is the mother of two boys, Paul and David, and her only girl, Elizabeth. Richard Jr. came next. A kid with a humor and mind of his own. He provide us with childhood laughs and a language yet to be diciphered. Next came James Wayne who soon adopted the name of "Jim Jim". Jim knows what he wants in life and determination is in his corner. David Forrest, the last born, is gifted with many talents, and will no doubt excel in any one of them.

My later interests would include hunting, fishing, horse racing, rebuilding cars, caring for family pets and writing sports articles. For several years I wrote the weekly sports column, "Wildlife and the Sportsman" for the Irondequoit and Greece Press. In 1950, I copywrited and published a book, "Fishing Log Book." A thousand copies were sold.

So a family has grown and I, like other fathers, once in a while look back to the "old days." I recall my first new car, the bachelor days, the sand lot ball games and friends never seen and surely never forgotten.

Israel GRADY

[28740]

28 APR 1828 - 5 NOV 1896

Family 1 : Sophronia MILBOURN

INDEX

[28740] J. H. Beers "History of Wayne County" (1889) offers: "Israel Grady: This gentleman is a well-known native citizen of Wayne County, Ohio, having been born in Greene Township April 28, 1828. His paternal grandfather was a native of England, and immigrated to America at an early day, settling in Pennsylvania, in which State he died. John Grady, father of Israel, was born in that State, and there learned the trade of coopering. (barrel making) In early manhood he married Elizabeth Odenkirk, a native of the Keystone State, of German ancestry. They were the parents of eight Children, three of whom are now living. In 1818 Johon Grady brought his family to Wayne County, settling on a farm in Greene Township. This was then a wild, unsettled place, and the farm had to be cleared from the forest. They had to endure all the discomforts and hardships of early pioneer life, but as the farm grew in beauty and value as the result of their toil, the hardy pioneer and his wife felt themselves amply rewarded by having a good home in which to rear the children rapidly growing up within their cabin walls. Mrs Grady was the first to hear the summons of the angel of death, passing away at the age of sixty-five years. Her husband survived her until 1864, when he died at the ripe age of nearly four score. Both were sincere members of the Baptist Church of Wooster. Israel Grady lived with his father until he was twenty-seven years of age, and in his youth took his share of the labors of the pioneer. At the age of twenty-four he was married to Miss Sophronia, daughter of Josiah and Eunice (Pratt) Milbourn, and born in East Union Township, May 13, 1828. In 1858 Mr. Grady bought a farm in East Union Township, on which were but a few improvements, and here he and his faithful wife industriously and intelligently did they labor that their farm was known as the finest in the township. The first work on their farm was the planting of eighteen acres of fruit trees. Mrs. Grady's father was also one of Wayne County's pioneers, coming here from Virginia with his mother at an early day, and settling in East Union Township. In 1819 he was married to Miss Eunice, a daughter of Oliver Pratt, who came to this county in 1814. Her father died in December, 1880, aged eighty-one years. Mrs Grady was brought up as pioneer's children were in those early days. She learned to spin and weave, was instructed in household work and often worked in the fields, at such labor as she was equal to. She remained at home until her marriage. She and her children are members of the Baptist Church. In 1881 Mr. Grady and his wife left the farm which had for so many years been their home and came to Wooster, settling on a piece of land in the edge of the city, forty and a half acres of it being within the corporation limits. To get possession of this tract he had to purchase from seventeen different owners. The place was wild and barren, but he set to work to improve it with the same untiring industry which had hitherto characterized his labors. One of the attractive features of the place is a fish pond, in the excavating and preparing of which two years were spent. This, when finished, he stocked with carp, which are in a thriving condition, and on its surface a graceful swan floats. To-day this place is one of the most attractive homes in Wooster, and many visitors are drawn thither by its beauty and the attraction of a boat ride on the glassy surface of the lake. In the summer as many as 1,500 persons have visited it in a month. Mr. and Mrs. Grady have two children: the eldest, Hulda (Mrs. Isaac H. Odenkirk,) lives with her parents: Josiah M. lives on the home farm, in East Union township. The life of Mr. Grady has been one of labor, and the honorable position he has attained is altogether due to the industry of himself and his capable wife. He has always been in favor of all projects whose object was to benefit the county, and he will long be remembered as one of its public spirited and enterprising citizens. The marriage certificate written by the pastor shows the marriage date as 30th day of September 1852. The record in the court house shows 28th day of September 1852. The latter was also signed by the pastor, E. G. Brown." His daughter Hulda m. Isaac H. Odenkirk - see http://www.odenkirk.com/family.shtml.

INDEX

[37614] Conrad's information is fromthe unverified "Pedigree Resource File," database, FamilySearch (http://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/SP91-1KD) in 2014 which offers: "Conrad served with the Livingston's Militia against the French as recorded by the roll of a military Co. organized under review at Oak Hill. 1715. We find church records about Conrad and Rachel in northern Livingston Town from around 1720 until 1749. One would assume, from his long residency in this area, that his disappearance from the rolls in1749 indicates his death. At the old local cemetery at Washington Hollow near Millbrook in Dutchess County is a stone bearing the name Conrad Ham,1694-1749. It was placed there as a memorial by John Ham but the burialplace is unknown. Conrad was Naturalized at Albany on January 17, 1715/16."
