[60347] Carroll's obituary: "Carroll H. Faulkner, 83, made his final surrender on Friday, August 10, 2007. He died as he wished at home, where during the final months of a long illness he received the loving ministrations of family and friends, clergy, and the staff and volunteers of New Hope Hospice in Eddington. Carroll came into the world during a blizzard on the shores of Grand Lake at Weston, Maine on January 24, 1924, the 7th of eight living children born to Bertha (Austin) and Leon E. Faulkner. After finishing the eighth grade at the one-room schoolhouse that still stands in Orient, Maine, he willingly went into the woods to work in his father's lumber camps. One month after his 18th birthday, Carroll was drafted into the US Army. After six months of overseas training, he shipped out to the Pacific Theater of World War II and participated in seven landings between September 1942 and August 1945. In 1948 Carroll married Averill ('Tillie') Thibeau and they raised their two daughters in Old Town. By 1968 Carroll found his true calling and began four decades of devoted service to the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and his career as a detox/rehabilitation counselor. He lost his first wife in 1978. In June 1981 he married Ann Holland, whom he met while they both worked at EMMC in Bangor. From then on, except for 3 1/2 years when Ann's work took them to Oklahoma, they lived happily in their home in Bangor. Carroll loved life and shared that joy with friends. He enjoyed fishing, telling and hearing tales of the North Woods, country music, spending time in his workshop, and cheering on the Boston Red Sox. He was proud of his Aroostook County roots and enjoyed the annual Faulkner family reunions held for many years in Wytopitlock, Maine. One August, that occasion included a visit to the graveyard on Pee-Ka-Boo Mountain, near Selden, where the founders of this clan lie buried. Patrick, an immigrant from Dublin, Ireland, and his wife Eunice (Crocker) Faulkner were Carroll's great-grandparents. Carroll was a Life Member of VFW Post #3381 and a Mason in the Star of the East Lodge No. 60 A.F. & A.M., both in Old Town. The centerpiece of Carroll's life was his tireless commitment to passing on to other alcoholics an understanding of the principles and practice of the life-changing, life-saving program for which he was so grateful. He was truly a power of example whose influence will be felt widely for generations. Carroll is survived by his wife Dr. Ann Holland and three daughters and their husbands: Diane Faulkner and Jerry Haynes of Blytheville, South Carolina; Rosemary (Faulkner) and Tony Richard of Old Town; and Emilie Holland and Charles Westcott of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. He also leaves one brother Jasper Faulkner and his wife Karen of Winn; two grandchildren Amanda Richard and her life partner Donita Gallant of Milford and Anthony J. ('TJ') Richard, Jr. of Rockland; special nephews Freddie Porter of Zephyrhills, Florida and Sumner Faulkner of Bangor; many other nephews, nieces and cousins. He will be keenly missed as well by his father-in-law Wendell Livingston of Sunbury Village, Bangor; sister-in-law Jane Livingston of Veazie and a special niece Grace Livingston of Huntington Beach, California; special friend Emma Jeane Foster of Orrington; and a host of anonymous 'friends of Bill W.' across the country."
