[47721] Lot R. Hensyl was the son of John D. Hensyl and Susan Rothermel. "Schuylkill County Pennsylvania: Genealogy, Family History, Biography - Vol. II", (Chicago, J.H. Beers, 1916), pp. 407-409: ". . . Lot R. Hensyl was born Jan. 6, 1840, near Trevorton, Northumberland county, and remained under the parental roof until seventten years of age, when he went to Philadelphia and began clerking in the coal office of his uncle, Samuel H. Rothermel, where he remained several months. Returning home, he worked for his father during the summer in a sawmill, while through the winter season he attended school until twenty years of age, thus acquiring a good literary education. He then began reading medicine with Dr. S.S. Smith, but on the outbrreak of the Civil war laid aside his books and enlisted in Company D, 52nd P.V.I., under Captain James Chamberlain. For over three years he valiantly fought for the preservation of the Union: he helped to storm all the forts at South Carolina: at Morris Island he was detailed as shipping clerk, and by special order was sent to Jacksonville, Fla., where he served in that capacity for three months. By order of General Foster he then returned to Morris Island, and was in the ordnance department until discharged in 1864. He was a brave and fearless soldier, always found at his post of duty. Returning home, he resumed the study of medicine with Dr. C.P. Herington, of Ashland, Schuylkill Co., Pa., with whom he remained for two and a half years, in 1866 and 1867 attending lectures at Jefferson Medical College. On receiving his diploma Dr. Hensyl located at Howard, where he soon built up a large and flourishing practice, which his skill and ability justly merited. He remained there until his death, Jan. 1, 1900.Dr. Hensyl married Sarah Elizabeth Heim, who was born in Lebanon, Pa., Oct. 15, 1849, a daughter of Rev. William and Lydia (Hepler) Heim. . . . Fraternally, Dr. Hensyl held membership in the I.O.O.F. and the G.A.R. and Veteran Legion, belonging to the local bodies at Howard. His political support was given to the Republican party. A talented, cultured gentleman, he held an honorable position among his professional brethren, and in social cirles also stood high. . . . "

[14748] "Spirit of the Age [Woodstock, VT], 22 Aprl 1905," p. 3: "The village loses another of its old-time merchants in the death of James Monroe Whitcomb, which took place at 9 o'clock Wednesday evening, April 19, after a very brief illness. He was in his 77th year. Mr. Whitconib was born in Stockbridge Oct. 10, 1828. After his marriage to Miss Irene Cushing, at Barnard, Jan. 7, 1850, he went to Grandetour, Ill., where he was in business for six years. In 1860 Mr. Whitcomb came to Woodstock and from that time up to 1894 he was identified with local business life, widely known in this section and much liked by all with whom he was brought into contact. On first coming here Mr. Whitcomb was clerk in Henry's hotel for some time. He then engaged in the provision business in company with the late W. R. Hewitt. His first location was under what is now known as the Adams House, on Central street; he then moved to the basement of the Standard block, and thence to the store now occupied by A. B. Morgan, selling out to 0. G. Kimball in 1880. He afterwards conducted a provision store on Central street, where the Whitcomb block now stands, disposing of his stock to I. C. White in 1894, and retiring from active business. In the past dozen years Mr. Whitcomb has lived quietly at his home on River street. During this time he has erected several houses in the village - one on North street, several at the lower end of the village, and the Whitcomb block on Central street. His familiar figure will be very much missed in this village where he was so long a resident. He is survived by a widow and two sons, Fred, of Boston, and Orley A., who has resided with his parents for the past three years."
