It was a great diplomatic success to have Gwijde (naturally an ally of Holland) appointed by the Pope as Bishop and ruler of Utrecht in 1301 after his predecessor Willem Berthout of Mechelen was killed in a lost battle against the "Lichtenbergers", a clan of Holland supporters in Utrecht. The situation changed after the spectacular victory of Flanders, Holland's most powerful regional rival, against the French at Courtrai / Kortrijk (the "Guldensporenslag") in 1302. Gwijde III of Dampierre, the Count of Flanders attacked Hainaut and Zeeland in 1303 and occupied Middelburg. On Duiveland, Bishop Gwijde of Avesnes lost a battle under his command and that of his young nephew, Count Willem III, and was he taken prisoner by the invaders, who advanced further into Holland. In 1304 however, the Flemish army was beaten near the besieged town of Zierikzee by a combined fleet of France and Holland, and they were driven out of Holland again. Flanders had to sign a humiliating peace-treaty. Bishop Gwijde was released not long afterwards and remained Bishop of Utrecht until his death."

Steinmetz, died yesterday of dropsy, aged 56 years. She was taken sick on her birthday, Sept. 8, and has since been confined to bed at her boarding house, No. 116 North Sixth Street, the home of Mrs. Mary E. Voorhees. Her husband died eight years ago. For the past two years she has resided in Allentown. Mrs. Steinmetz was a daughter of the late Philip Breiner and was born on what is now the David Keck farm in North Whitehall Township. She is survived by an only son, W. E. Steinmetz of this city, and five grandchildren. The funeral will be held at noon from her late home, with services and burial at Miller's Church."

Mr. Brillhart was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Xenia Baptist Church. He is survived by two sons Raymond D. Brillhart of 201 Caldwell and Rev. Neal D. Brillhart of San Angelo, Tx; two daughters Mrs. Lois Maxwell of Redwood, Ca. and Mrs. Donna F. Edwards of Overland Park; two sisters, Mrs. Arla Farmer of 823 Holbrook and Mrs. Dona Davis of Kansas City. There are 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cheney's Memorial Chapel. A son and grandson of the deceased, Rev. Nel Brillhart and Rev. Terry R. Brillhart, will officiate. Burial will be in Mapleton Cemetery."

She was born on Jan. 8, 1963, in Blue Hill, Maine, to Robert 'Bob' and Edna (Eaton) Williams. Serena grew up in Stonington with her brothers John and James 'Jimmy,' and her sisters Sheila, Shelley, and Sherri. Later in life she had a loving stepmother, Diane Berlew. An avid artist and lover of nature with self-described magical powers, Serena had a zest for life unmatched by most and gave so much of herself to others. She lived an incredibly full life on her own terms, working as a manager at John Peters Inn, clammer with her cherished sister Sheila, 'sterngirl' with her father, and most recently a professional gardener."
