[18388] "Freeport Journal-Standard [Freeport, Illinois], 31 January 1938," p. 12: "Funeral services for John Motter, prominent farmer of this community and retired business man, who died at his home here Saturday afternoon, will be held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the home and at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. George Gable will officiate and burial will be made in North Grove cemetery. Mr. Motter was a former proprietor of a grocery and meat market and soap factory here, but retired from business about fifteen years ago to devote his time to two farms. He was born November 25, 1855, and was married to Alice Icely Nov. 8, 1883. In 1933 the couple marked their golden wedding anniversary. Surviving are two sons, Ernest, Oak Park, and Lloyd, Rockford; two brothers, Will, South Dakota, and Aaron, Leaf River, and two sisters, Mrs. Susan Schreiber and Mrs. Amelia Schreiber, both of Leaf River. Mr. Motter, a director of the former Leaf River State bank, was a founder of the Methodist church and had served In various capacities for many years."
