He was born in Boston, Mass. April 23, 1907, the son of Charles P. ond Lena (Curtis) Hutchins. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth E. (Rich) Hutchins, in 1984. He was a graduate of Newton Country Day School, Newton, Mass., received a bachelor of arts degree from Williams College in 1928, and was a graduate of the School of Forestry, University of Maine at Orono. Mr. Hutchins was a recipient of honorary degrees including a master of science from Colby College in 1949, doctor of law from the University of Maine in 1951, doctor of humanities from Husson College in 1971, and doctor of science business adminstration from Thomas College in 1985. He was a lieutenant J.G. during World War II with the US Navy and served as chairman of the pulp and paper division of the War Production Board. At the time of his death he was chairman of the board Dead River Co. of Bangor; commissioner of Roosevelt Campobello International Park; trustee of College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor; member of Phi Beta Kappa; member of the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation; trustee of the Bangor Theological Seminary; and a member of All Souls Congregational Church. Mr Hutchins had been president from 1948 to 1957 and chairman from 1952 to 1958 of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Co.; president of the St. Croix Paper Co from 1959 to 1963; and president of Dead River Co. from 1935 to 1957. Mr Hutchins was a former director of the following companies and organizations: the American Woolen Co., Atlas Plywood Corp., Avis Inc., Bangor Punta Corp., Guilford Industries, Inc., Trust Co., Scott Paper Co., Store Street Bank and Trust Co., Northeast Airlines, Inc., Maine Development Corp., the Association of American Railroods, Boys Clubs of America, and the United States Chamber of Commerce from 1961 to 1969 serving as chairmon of the Natural Resources Committee and a member of the Transportation and Communications Committee. He was a former member of the following civic organizations: the Maine Environmental Improvement Commission, the Bangor City Council, serving as chairmon in 1943, Maine State legislature in 1943, the New England Council, serving as president in 1954, the American Pulpwood Association, serving as president in 1946-1947, the Investment Committtee, Colby College, Maine Higher Education Committee, Canadian-Americon Commmittee of the National Planning Association, the United Nations FAO Mission to Chile in 1959, the Governor's Committee on Forest legislation, State Credit Research Committee, Governors' Seed Committee, chairman and member and trustee of Eastern Maine General Hospital. He belonged to the following clubs: The Brook Club and the Pinnacle Club, both of New York City, the Union Club of Boston, and the Downtown Club, both of Boston, the Penobscot Valley Country Club of Orono, the Tarratine Club of Bangor, and the Pot and Kettle Club of Bar Harbor. Surviving are one son, Christopher Hutchins of Bangor; two daughters, Mrs. Otis (Hilda) McCollum of Chevy Chase, Md., and Mrs. Will (Hope) Blackburn of Fairhope, Ala.; six grandchildren, Alexander C.H. DiNapoli, Julie H. DiNapoli, Charles M. Hutchins, J. Britton Hutchins, Bradley C. McCollum and Courtney R. McCollum."
