Brackett, Sr., 100, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 10, 1997 at a local health-care facility in Belfast. He was born July 28, 1897 in Belfast, the son of Albert E. and Melissa E. (Flagg) Brackett. Mr. Brackett was the youngest child of three brothers and one sister. He started out as a bicycle repair man and as the automobile became more prevalent he eventually became an automotive repair man. In 1917 he drove the first bus from Rockland to Bangor for the McLaughlin Bus Lines. He was an avid outdoorsman fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Malden, Mass. He was predeceased by his wife, Hazel M. (Dean) Brackett, who died in 1987. Mr. Brackett is survived by three sons George and Shirley Brackett of Norway, Stuart and Betty Brackett Jr. of Hermon, Frederick and Charlotte Brackett of Searsport; a daughter, Margaret and John Merrithew of Searsport; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews."

The parentage of John de St John has not been confirmed but it would fit from a chronological point of view if he was the son of Adam de Port.]

The Testa de Nevill includes a writ of King John dated 1212 which records that "Gilbertus de Port" held "Thornton …hundredum de Gillingeham" in Dorset, adding that it was "per servicium…de excæta de feodo qui fuit Ade de Port fugitivi" [2544]. The relationship between Adam de Port and Gilbert de Port has not been ascertained. They could not have been father and son, as Adam´s descendants adopted the name St John. It is possible that they were brothers.]

In 15 John [1214-15], he gave 500 marks to the King for livery of all the lands of Adam De Port, his father. The two following years he executed the sheriff's office for the co. Southampton, but was subsequently in arms with the other barons against the crown and witnessed the confirmation of the Magna Charta, and did not return to his allegiance until sometime after the accession of Henry III. He made his peace, however, effectually, for in the 11th of Henry III [1227], he was appointed governor of the islands of Guernsey and Jersey."
