James' obituary: "James Richard Mathews, Jr ,88,passed away December 8th, 2025 in Cherryfield.
He was born July 29th, 1937 in Winter Harbor, Maine , the son of James and Bernice (Harrington) Mathews. After the birth of his brother, Charles Foster, they moved to the Ridge Road in Cherryfield where his two sisters were born: Gloria and Lucille. The four siblings held an abiding love for one another and had many stories to share about their childhood. Dickie, as he was known to both family and friends, attended the Cherryfield schools and later joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 to 1962. He was an aircraft mechanic for B-47s and was part of the 546th Bomb Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas for most of those years. While he was in Arkansas he married Octavia Johnson and they had a daughter, Karen Lynn. They divorced before he returned to Maine. Not long after he came back to his hometown, Dickie started dating Audrey Pinkham. They were married in 1963 and spent 48 happy years together until Audreys passing in 2012. He and Audrey worked several years at the Frost Mill in Mariaville and later Dickie took a job with the State of Maine Highway Department, retiring after 22 years. That said, he was never one to remain idle, so he spent a good portion of his retirement years cutting and selling firewood, helping out his family and neighbors, and being a wonderful friend to the entire community. It would be rare to find someone in Cherryfield who didnt know him. He loved to visit folks and always brought with him a unique sense of humor and a kind heart. Dickie is survived by his grandchildren, including those by marriage: Karlee Frisby, James Baldwin, and Randy Caler, Scott and Kevin Rogers; his great grandchildren, Ian, Jonah, and Riley Frisby, from Arkansas, Aaron Caler, Amanda Kennedy and Andrea Hartford ,his great grandson Hunter and great , great granddaughter Paisley Frisby of Texas, his stepson, Lemont Caler and wife Carol: his sister-in-law, Leta Mathews; his nieces, Kelley Wescott, Amy Mathews, Katie Parker and Susie Morse, grand nieces Laura Morse, Lanie Morse and Emma Parker, great nephew, Nicholas Morse, special cousins Margie, Kathy and Mike Gerrish , Gordon Harrington, and many more special cousins. Among his many cherished friends were Bill and Deb Sehl , Ruth Crowley, Karen Redimarker ,Michelle McCann, Alvin and Lauren Hall, Richie Willey, Art Tatangelo , Doug Finn and the entire Perry family . There are so many friends it would be impossible to list them all, but each of you know you held a special place in his heart. He was pre-deceased by his wife Audrey, his parents, James and Bernice Mathews, his daughter, Karen Henry, his sister Lucille MacQuarrie and his brother-in-law Carroll; his sister Gloria Bagley and both brother in laws, Roland Morse and Julian Bagley; his brother, Foster Mathews,; his nephew, Rodney Morse: his step-daughter Margo and husband Wayne, his step-son Earl Caler and his special aunt, Grace Gerrish."
