[23061] Walter m. Mary, sister of Isabella, Countess of Menteth; he had the title adjudged to him 1258, and was confirmed in it 1285. "The Great Historic Families of Scotland", by James Taylor (London: J.S Virtue & Co., 1889), p. 19: "Isabella, daughter of the Countess by Walter Comyn, married her cousin, William Comyn; and after long contention a compromise was effected in the year 1285, and the vast domains of the earldom were divided between the Lady Isabella and the husband of her mother's youngest sister, Walter Stewart, a son of the High Steward of Scotland, who obtained the title. The new Earl of Menteith, surnamed Bailloch, or 'the Freckled,' was a famous warrior. He joined the disastrous expedition under St. Louis of France, called the Third Crusade, for the recovery of the Holy Sepulchre, and fought with great distinction at the battle of Largs in 1263, at which his elder brother defeated the Norwegians under King Haco. He took a prominent part in the proceedings connected with the contest for the Scottish crown after the death of the 'Maiden of Norway,' and was one of the commissioners nominated by Robert Bruce in his competition with John Baliol. The Earl left two sons, who dropped their paternal surname of Stewart, and assumed that of Menteith. The younger of the two, Sir John Menteith of Ruskie, is the 'false Menteith' who is branded by Scottish tradition and history as the betrayer of the patriot Wallace. Lord Hailes, who sometimes carried his scepticism respecting the statements of the old Scottish historians a great deal too far, discredits the story, which he asserts rests only on tradition and the allegations of Blind Harry. Sheriff Mark Napier, a descendant of Sir John Menteith, has made an elaborate defence of his ancestor from the charge of betraying Wallace; and Mr. Burton designates it as a part of the romance of Wallace's career that he was betrayed by a fellow-countryman and an old companion in arms. 'Menteith,' he adds, 'held the responsible post of Governor of Dumbarton Castle, and it seems likely that he only performed a duty, whether an agreeable one or not.'"
As "Marden Stub", he is signator to a petition of September, 1727 (presented to the Court of Quarter Session in Philadelphia, seeking a road from Olney to Tulpehocken) given in "Colonial Records of Pennsylvania," III:323. The second wife of Martin Stupp and his children and descendants except for (Anna) Christina Stupp and her line are from David Becker, 502 Janeway Drive - Apt. 76, Norristown, PA 19410 (2/96 via Internet). He writes: "Martin Stupp was an early immigrant to America, about 1709-1710. He settled in the Schoharie region of New York. Due to extreme circumstances in that area, many of these original Palatine settlers sailed on canoes down the Susquehanna and settled the area which was to be known as the 'Tulpehocken Settlement' (it is unsure at this point if the Martin who was among these original settlers was the Martin from Germany or a son of Martin, thus Martin, Jr. Nonetheless, it was this Martin who came to Tulpehocken who was the father of Christine....) Martin Stupp was one of the original settlers of this area." According to the book 'Palatine Families of New York, 1710,' by Henry Z. Jones, Martin Stupp and Anna Catharine Schultz had ten children." - see Vol. 2, pp. 1023-24. Martin's will was probated 19 March 1755. He and his family arrived in the Tulpehocken area after 10 Jan 1725 and his signature is on a petition for a road from Olney to Tulpehocken (presented to the Court of Quarter Sessions at Philadelphia in Sept., 1727. He is owner of 118 acres patented 20 June 1748 on Pichard Penn's Manor of Andulhea map (- "Hist. of Bethel and Tulpehocken Twps.", which also includes a map dated 1723 showing tracts owned by early settlers including an Adam Stupp). Martin's will names children: Frederick, Martinus (Martin,Jr.), Abraham, Elizabeth (m. Wagoner), Anna Kinugonda (m. Gruber), Catrine (m. Zerbe), Madlena (m. Shneyder), Gertraut (m. Paffenberger), Marialis (m. Neff), Margred Christina and Dorothea.
According to Pastor Stoever's records, Martin had two children with his second wife (Abraham and John Heinrich {who perhaps died young, as he is not listed in the will]). - information in this paragraph is from Kevin Stupp via Internet (KSStupp@aol.com), 12/96. A "Martin Stiep" was naturalized at the Mayor's Court in Albany, NY 31 Jan 1716. "Martin Stup" and wife Anna Catherina and one child lived at Schmidsdorf, NY in 1717. The covenant of Christ Lutheran Church, Tulpehocken, was signed in Sept., 1743 by "Martin Stupp." "Early Pennsylvania Births, 1675-1875," Charles A. Fisher, compiler (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co.,, 2009), p. 38, lists a Martin Stupp as a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, Berks Co., PA in May 1743. Martin's will leaves his plantation to sons Abraham and Martin (200 acres) and they are to pay the estate 400 pounds and provide for Susanna (widow) - other children are to have equal shares of the balance.

Jones: Maarten Stub (no wife) with 3 children were on Captain John Untank's ship in the 5th party of Palatines in Holland (Rotterdam Lists). Martin Stupp with 4 persons over 10 years of age was on the June 30, 1710 subsistence list of New York Governor Robert Hunter. List of March 25, 1712 Martin & 3 persons over 10 years. List of June 24, 1712 Martin & 4 persons over 10 years. Martin Stiep was naturalized January 31, 1715/16 at Albany. Martin Stub & Anna Catharina with 1 child were at Neu-Ansberg about 1716/17. Martin Stub was a signer of the road petition in Tulpehocken in September 1727. On May 12, 1732 he was issued a warrant to have a parcel of land surveyed in Richard Penn's Manor Andulhea. The 118 acres of surveyed land, located about 1 1/4 miles northwest of Rehersburg were patented to Martin on June 20, 1743.
From Thirty Thousand Names of Immigrants of PA by Daniel Rupp, page 465: Names of Early Settlers in Tulpehocken, Berks and Lebanon Counties: As early as 1723, 33 families of Germans, who had come to New York in 1710, settled in Schoharie in 1713, left there and located on Tulpehocken Creek; among these were: 17 names are listed including Lorentz Zerbe, and Andreas Walborn. As "Marden Stub", he is signator to a petition of September, 1727 (presented to the Court of Quarter Session in Philadelphia, seeking a road from Olney to Tulpehocken) given in "Colonial Records of Pennsylvania," III:323. In 1728, others from Schoharie settled here: 15 names are listed including Johan Philip Schneider - In 1729, Conrad Weiser left Schoharie with his wife and 5 children and settled near the present site of Womelsdorf, one mile east of town. He was usefully employed in various capacities by the Government of Pennsylvania, until within a few weeks of his death. He died July 13, 1760, aged 83 years, 8 months and 12 days. His earthly remains moulder in their narrow house, near Womelsdorf. The first settlers in Tulpehocken were Lutherans and German Reformed. Rev. Tobias Wagner was the first pastor of the Lutheran Congregation. The following is a List of the members of the Tulpehocken Church, from 1743 to 1746. Note: A number of names are listed including Martin Stupp, Michael Nef Sr., Christian Walborn, Johan Philip Schneider, Abraham Nef, Andreas Wigner, Peter Zerb, George Pfafenberger, Daniel Schneider, Heinrich Gruber, Christian Gruber, Johannes Zerbe, & Jacob Zerbe. (All having family names who married into the Stupp family.)
