[10495] "Republican and Herald [Pottsville, Pennsylvania], 4 October 1923," p. 1: "Thomas Cantlin, one of Shenandoah's oldest residents, died at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, No. 11 South Jardin street His death onme as a shock to his family and friends, as although he had been quite feeble for several months, he was able to be about the house yesterday and felt improved. He had suffered from complications for some time, but was on the mend, when a heart attack proved fatal. Mr. Cantlin was born in St. Clair and came to Shenandoah more than fifty years ago. He worked in the mines moat of the time, retiring some years ago on account cf failing health. He was of a quiet, unassuming disposition and spent all his time since with his family. He enjoyed a large circle of friends. Mr. Cantlin is the last of his family. He is survived by his wife, four daughters Mrs. William Shick. Philadelphia; Mrs. Albln Melusky. and Misses Ellzabeth and Agnes. Two sons also survive, John, of the Miners Banking and Trust Company, and Dr. Frank Cantlin. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation." Frank Hurley Cantlin, M.D. [Thomas' son], signed the death certificate (#109027) of Thomas J. Cantlin, b. 12 May 1848 in St. Clair, PA, d. 3 Oct 1923, of Shenandoah, Schuylkill Co., PA, buried 6 Oct 1923 in Annunciation Cemetery - did he have the birth place and date correct? There is a Thomas Cantlin, b. ca. 1852, in the family of James and Margaret Cantlin in the 1870 federal census at Galway, Saratoga Co., NY - this Thomas was b. in Ireland according to this census - some researchers seem to have confused him with our Thomas. The 1920 federal census in Shenandoah, Schuylkill Co., PA lists our Thomas as b. ca. 1851 in Ireland! who emigrated ca. 1858 - and states he is a laborer in a coal mine. So: what is his real birth place and date?

[14192] See "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Vol. II," Robert Charles Anderson (Boston: NEHGS, 1995), p. 953. William was a sailing captain and explored Florida in 1663 from the Barbados. He came to America with his mother in 1623 on the Ship Anne and is also known as William the Elder. Hilton Head, SC is named for him. He m. (1) ca. 1640 Sarah Greenleave (or Greenleaf - she d. ca. 1657) and (2) 16 July 1659 Mehitable Nowell. For his early life, see "Colonial Era History of Dover, NH," Scales. He was a Freeman of Massachusetts Bay, 18 May 1653. For seafaring, see "Hilton Head - A Sea Chronicle," Virginia C. Holgren (Hilton Head Island Pub. Co.), pp. 30-39 & 516. NEHGR 124:88-108 details his activities as an explorer. A file in the NEHGS database offers: "Occupation: Distinguished master mariner, navigator and cartographer, he sailed to Surinam, London, Barbados, Carolina, etc. In the autumn of 1662, his ship Adventure carried an exploratory expedition 'for ye discovery of Cape Feare [now North Carolina] and more South parts of Florida,' that also included his son-in-law, Edward Winslow, and brother-in-law Enoch Greenleaf. A map in the British Museum in London is labeled 'Discovery made by William Hilton of Charles towne in New England mariner from Cape Hatterask Lat: 35, 30, to ye west of Cape Roman, in Lat 32. 30, in ye yere 1662.' Another voyage was made in August 1663 during which they explored the entrance to Port Royal Sound, noting just inside the entrance the existence of a headland - a high point of land used as a reference point by mariners. This was later called Hilton's Head in his honor. In 1664 he published a work about his explorations, 'A Relation of a Discovery Lately Made on the Coast of Florida.'"
