Irene wrote in 1986: "I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. I worked for several years as a secretary and office manager, then married in 1945 to a man from Kansas whom I met at the USO! When World War II ended we were in Newfoundland where our oldest daughter had been born, then returned to Kansas to re-enter civilian life. My husband found work with the Federal gov't connected with the helium extraction industry. We moved to the Navajo Indian Reservation at Shiprock, New Mexico. Our daughter attended public school there, a minority among Indian students. I went to work at the local Indian Hospital, beginning a 23 year federal career with the Public Health Service and later with the the Enviornmental Protection Agency. When my husband retired on disability in 1958, we moved to Farmington, New Mexico. I became the administrative head of a small public service research project. By 1964 we were in Rockville, Maryland. I retired early in 1974 in order to accept a job with the local Presbytery. For the next 8 years I promoted equality for women in the church and also was responsible for starting 12 new churches. Several of the new congregations are Korean. The chance to work closely with many fine Korean people is a gift I will always treasure. I am an elder in the Presbyterian church, active now in women's groups at the local church. In 1982 I retired from my professional relationship with the church. My education includes a bachelors degree from the University of Maryland in behavioral science and I am presently engaged in a masters program in General Administration." Irene was survived by her three children, Margaret Louise (Hardman-MUYE), Anne Elizabeth Hardman, and Thomas James Hardman (Jr), from her marriage to Thomas J. Hardman.
Thomas and Irene's son, Thomas, wrote: "Mom's health was really quite good in most ways throughout her long life. However, in her mid-80s she began to increasingly suffer from congestive heart failure, and eventually had to go to hospital and then to residential care in the summer of 2011. She passed from this world September 15, 2011. Her memorial services were held in St Matthew's Presbyterian Church in Aspen Hill, Maryland, and these services were very well attended from both within and without the community of this church where she had long been an Elder. In particular, it was very good to see so many of her co-workers from her Federal career come to pay their respects. One gentleman said "she made the place run. I don't know how we could have done it without her". Her eulogy from her pastor dwelt long on Mom's contribution to Women in Presbytery, noting that women clergy were almost non-existent when Mom began her work and that by the time of Mom's passing, about half of Presbyterian clergy were women.
"Mom was absolutely devoted to her yard, as much so as with anything else she claimed as her own. When we moved into our home in Aspen Hill in 1963, the house was nearly new and almost without landscaping or ornament. By the time she passed, our azaleas were the subject of much admiration and envy, the lawn was immaculate, the trees have restored a natural-seeming canopy and in all green seasons the flowers are everywhere. After spending almost all of her spare time in the gardens during her life in Aspen Hill, her remains will in part spend the rest of eternity there as this is where I scattered her ashes to rejoin the earth on which she lavished such care."

[48815] "Bangor Daily Nws [Bangor, ME], 30 June 2008": "Brewer - Fred Crowell Hanson, 89, died June 28, 2008. He was born Oct. 5, 1918, in Bangor, to Walter King and Edna (Crowell) Hanson. Fred was married to Hester Anita Billings in 1942. He graduated from Bangor High School and attended Hebron Academy for post-graduate studies. Fred graduated from the University of Maine in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He often spoke fondly of the summer he spent in the fire tower on Soper Mountain in the north woods of Maine. After graduation Fred accepted a job with Sperry Gyroscope Co., a defense industry company in New York. After the war ended, Fred and Hester returned to Bangor, where Fred joined his father in the family business, Dunham-Hanson Co. In 1964 Fred and his father sold the wholesale division of Dunham-Hanson Co., and retained the retail division, which became Bangor Hardware Co. Fred and Hester continued their presence in the store after their retirement. Fred was very involved in the community through his work with City Club of Bangor, Bangor Noontime Rotary, Bangor Mechanic Association, SCORE, Penobscot County Conservation Association, Conservation Camp and Toastmasters. Fred was very involved with Bald Mountain Ski Area, Dedham. It was owned and operated by Penobscot Valley Ski Club, of which Fred served as president. He was often seen in his suspenders, red flannel shirt and wide-brimmed straw hat operating the water powered saw mill during Living History Days at Leonard's Mills, Bradley. Fred also served as treasurer for the organization from 1994 to 2002. He was a lifelong member of All Souls Congregational Church, where he served as collector for many years. Fred and Hester were members of All Souls Couples Club, where many of their life-long friendships were formed. Fred enjoyed sailing on his boat, the Nereus, fishing, gardening, camping, his camp at Pleasant River Lake and family activities. He loved playing cribbage with his sons and his friends. Fred is survived by his four children, Carolyn Thompson and her husband, Ray, of Brewer, Richard Hanson and his wife, Brenda, of Orrington, Helen Schacht and friend, Robert Hills, of Greenville and Thomas Hanson and his wife, Anne, of Orrington; nine grandchildren, eight great-grand-children, several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Bamford of Bangor. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Hester; his brother, Robert H. Hanson of Hampden; and his sister, Marion H. LeBlanc of Bangor."

[34650] Ancestry.com offers: "Ridley Name Meaning - English: habitational name from any of various places in England so named, especially the one in Northumberland, which, like that in Cheshire, is derived from Old English geryd 'channel' + leah 'wood', 'clearing'. Those in Essex and Kent appear in Domesday Book as Retleia and Redlege respectively, and get their names from Old English hreod 'reed' + leah. Possibly also an altered spelling of German Riedel or Riedler (see Ridler)."
