[46236] "The Baltimore Sun, 31 August 1965," p. 38 "J. Hambleton Ober, retired bank executive, author, historian and civic leader, died yesterday at his home after a brief illness. Mr. Ober, who was 77, was vice president and chairman of the trust committee of the Maryland National Bank until his retirement five years ago. Mr. Ober, a student of history turned banker, was active in several fields, including community affairs, charitable fund-raising and writing. In 1943 he was named chairman of the Community Fund after serving the fund for many years as treasurer and in 1949 he served as chairman of the Coordinating Council for Fund-Raising Campaigns. He was also a trustee of the Kernan Hospital for Crippled Children, the Children's Medical Center of the Johns Hopkins University and the Peabody Institute. Since his retirement, Mr. Ober was occupied with writing a book, 'Writing: Man's Greatest Invention,' an analysis and history of writing and other forms of communication from cave art to English letters. The book was recency published by the Peabody Institute. During the years preceding and following World War I, Mr. Ober was a frequent contributor to The Evening Sun, writing on such diverse subjects as military preparedness, the Inca civilization, city planning and the origins of the American system of government. Mr. Ober was born in Baltimore and received his primary education at the Gilman School. He graduated from Princeton University in 1909 with a major in history. He attended the University of Munich for a year, and after studying briefly at the Johns Hopkins University returned to Princeton where he received master's degree in history. He returned to Baltimore, where he worked for various investment banking firms, until World War I, during which he served as a captain of a field artillery unit in France with the American Expeditionary Force. After the war, Mr. Ober joined the Morris Plan Bank and served as president from 1923 to 1926, when he resigned to become vice president of Hambleton & Co., an investment banking firm. He later was vice president of the Baltimore National Bank, which through a series of mergers became the Maryland National Bank. Mr. Ober was an avid sportsman, engaging in fox hunting and shooting. His hobbies were bookbinding and the study of the history of books. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Moseley Ober; a daughter, Mrs. Mason F. Lord, and four grandchildren"
