"The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 20 December 2023:
Eben Morrison Whitcomb Jr., 97, passed on May 13, 2023, in Middletown, Conn. Eben Jr. was a natural leader and mentor with an irrepressible zest for life that he expressed with graciousness, generosity, optimism and sense of humor. He was a master mariner, seaman, and navigator. He was a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Captain who frequently sailed as captain of his tall ships in New England, the Caribbean, and in-between.
Eben Morrison Whitcomb Jr. was born in Washington DC to Eben Morrison Sr. and Eleanor Gillette Whitcomb. His college education as an engineering student at the Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, N.J., was interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 13, 1943, and subsequently served as an Ensign and Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He trained in the U.S. Navys V-12 program at the Stevens Institute of Technology and Yale University, and then served as a Lieutenant engineering officer on the Patrol Craft Escort USS PCE-873 in the Pacific Ocean. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 6, 1946. In 1947 he completed his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering at Yale University, where he also competed on the Varsity Swimming Team. From 1948 to 1968 he was an engineering manager for the Eastern Fine Paper Company and the Brown Company, manufacturers of fine paper.
In June of 1958, Eben Jr. married Shirley Litchfield, a school teacher originally from Ellsworth. For their honeymoon, they took a years leave of absence from their jobs and, with Eben Sr. and two other crew members, sailed Eben Sr.s 40' schooner Maryleigh on a year-long adventure circumnavigating the North Atlantic Ocean. From Northeast Harbor in Maine, they sailed to Newfoundland, Scotland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, England, Portugal, Gibraltar, Spain, France, the Mediterranean Ocean, the Canary Islands, recrossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean Sea, including port stops at Antigua, Puerto Rico, Hati, the Bahama Islands, then North along the East Coast of North America, returning to Northeast Harbor, Maine, in summer 1959. During this trip they met many people whose families remain close friends of the Whitcomb family to the present, including Hendrick Fasmer VII and his family of Alvøen, Norway, and the late Jens Duborg, from Germany, who sailed with Eben and Shirley to the U.S. aboard Maryleigh in 1958-9. Duborg emigrated to the US and built a successful precision machining business and raised a family in Massachusetts.
Eben Jr. and Shirley had three boys between 1960 and 1966: Eben III, Louis and Ruel. From 1959 to 1969 the family relocated to many paper factory towns including Brewer, Lincoln, Gorham, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Holyoke, Mass., with Shirley and the boys spending summers at their camp on Branch Lake in Ellsworth. They relocated to Guilford, Conn. in 1969, when Eben became a senior engineer at the George Schmitt Company, a company specializing in high-tech precision rotogravure printing. In 1970 Shirley and Eben Jr. moved to their residence at Waterside Lane, Clinton, Conn., where they lived for the next 52 years and developed many close friendships.
In 1970 Eben Jr. and Shirley incorporated Dirigo Cruises Ltd., a limited partnership corporation, together with 14 private investors, and commissioned the building of a 94-ton, 131-foot, gaff-rigged wooden schooner at the Harvey F. Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol. Launched in 1973, they named her Harvey Gamage in honor of the master shipwright who oversaw her construction and fitting out. For the next 21 years the Harvey Gamage offered vacation and sail training school cruises in Maine and New England in the summers, and in the Caribbean in the winter.
In 1976 Eben Jr. created the SeaMester program in partnership with Southampton College of Long Island University, with a South-bound SeaMester aboard the Harvey Gamage every fall from New England to St. Thomas, and a reciprocal North-bound SeaMester each spring. In 1984 Dirigo Cruises acquired the 105-foot ferrocement schooner Rachel and Ebenezer and operated her for several years with the Harvey Gamage.
Hundreds of crew members and SeaMester students found their experiences on Ebens tall ships to be transformative and life changing. He provided countless young men and women the opportunity to serve as crew members, and mentored their advancement from cook and deckhand, to officer, and captain. Eben is remembered by them for his generosity, his professionalism, his graciousness, and his willingness to place his faith in them. Ebens tall ships were training ships not just because of SeaMester; they were training ships because he set an example of quiet competence, then delegated responsibilities, and entrusted many with their first commands. He was awarded the 2017 Tall Ships America Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded annually by Tall Ships America to an individual who has dedicated their lifes work to getting people to sea under sail and has worked to preserve the traditions and skills of sail training. Eben Jr. and Shirley made many close friends and touched many lives.
In 1994 Eben Jr. and Shirley retired from the windjammer business and sold the Harvey Gamage. He continued to closely follow her ongoing development and continued operation as a sail training ship.
Eben Jr. is survived by his wife Shirley Litchfield Whitcomb of Haddam, Conn.; his sister Ann Whitcomb Hessler Johnson of Holden; his son Eben Morrison Whitcomb III and his partner Belinda Jones of Westbrook, Conn.; and his son Louis Litchfield Whitcomb and his wife Jennifer Lynn Forrence of Baltimore, Md. He was predeceased by his son Ruel Whitney Whitcomb of Clinton, Conn.
