Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995):
Edward VIII (born 1894, ruled 1936) was nearly 42 years old when he became
king on the death of his father, George V, on Jan. 20, 1936. Toward the end
of that year he expressed the desire to marry an American woman, Wallis
Warfield Simpson, whom he had met in 1931. Simpson had already been married
twice, and her second divorce was not yet final.
The British and Commonwealth governments strongly opposed this marriage as
not in keeping with the dignity of the Crown. Edward, however, had made up
his mind; and on Dec. 11, 1936, he abdicated, or gave up the throne. His
younger brother, George VI, took the throne. The first act of the new king
was to name his brother duke of Windsor. The duke married Simpson in France
on June 3, 1937 [at Château de Candé, Maine-et-Loire].
From 1937 to 1939 and after 1945 they made their home in Paris. During
World War II he served as governor of the Bahamas. He died in Paris on May
28, 1972. She died there on April 24, 1986.
[57745] Maude is daughter of Albion Benjamin Foss (b. in 1858) & Emily H. Marston (b. in 1852; m. 13 October 1875 in Machias, Washington Co., ME).
[41638] An unverified file in 2016 in Ancestry.com offers: "Stephen Goodwin was born on June 14, 1790, in North Carolina. He married Mary Ann Pearson on November 15, 1810, in Eaton, Ohio. They had seven children in 14 years. He died in Georgetown, Illinois . . . Mary Ann Pearson was born on October 1, 1790, in North Carolina, the child of Jonathan and Sarah. She married Stephen Goodwin on November 15, 1810, in Eaton, Ohio . . . . She died on February 5, 1876, in Bloomingdale, Indiana, having lived a long life of 85 years."
