Alan obtained soon after the Norman conquest a grant of the castle of Oswestry. - The Complete Peerage vol.V, pp.391-392. A different ancestry for Alan is given in "The Origin of the Stuarts and the FitzAlans," by George Washington, in "English Origins of New England Families - Second Series," III:429ff., refering to Dr. J. Horace Round's presentations on the subject. Dr. Round proposes that the line descends from Alan, Dapifer of Dol in Brittany ca. 1080, "son of Flaald," who had sons: 1) Alan (Junior) Dapifer of Dol, seen in Brittany ca. 1095 and 1097, a leader in the First Crusade; 2) Flaad, called son of Alan, seen in Monmouth 1101-02 as a follower of William, son of Baderon (another Breton and Lord of Monmouth); 3) Rhiwallon, a monk of the Abbey of St. Florent de Semur, near Dol. Washington continues (pp. 429-30): "Flaad (who became heir to his elder brother Alan) was father of Alan FitzFlaad, Sheriff of Shropshire, whose rise under Henry I is linked by Round with the support given to Henry by the Bretons before his accession, when he was lord of the Cotentin. Alan founded Sporle Abbey, Norfolk, as a cell of St. Florent, and had three sons by his wife, Aveline de Hesdin (cf. Sir Anthony R. Wagner, "English Genealogy," 1960, pp. 82-3): (1) Jordan FitzAlan, Dapifer of Doll in Brittany circa 1129, who was a benefactor of the church of Sele (another cell of St. Florent), and also appears in 1130 in an agreement with the Abbot of Marmoutier, near Tours; he left issue. (2)William FitzAlan, Lord of Oswestry in Shropshire, founder of Haughmond priory and a benefactor of Monmouth, who died in 1160; and was the ancestor the FitzAlans, Earls of Arundel from about 1290 to 1580. (3) Walter the Stewart, or FitzAlan, who went northwards to Scotland and became Dapifer Regis under the Scots King David; he founded Paisely abbey and died in 1177. In his original paper Round noted a possibe fourth son, Simon, ancestor of the Boyds; but in 1902 he satisfied himself that Simon was the issue of Aveline de Hesdin's later marriage with Robert FitzWalter.... From Walter the Steward were descended the royal house of Stuart, including Lords Bute, Castlestewart, and Galloway (all of whom possess, if Round may be credited, only an illegitimate link with the original stem). In the year 1335 the office of Stewart of Scotland was claimed by Richard FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel as his by hereditary right...."
In France, in a little medieval town called Dol-de-Bretagne, there is a small museum in which the geneology of the Stuart clan is shown: FitzAlan-Flaad was born there. The local cathedral has distinct Cathar/Masonic symbols and two pillars, both different, are outside the church parvis. [45406] "The Akron Beacon Journal, 31 October 1950," p. 53: "John E. Sieber and the old Buchtel Hotel that he loved so well are both gone now. Mr. Sieber died Monday at his residence, 1006 W. Market St. He would have been 85 next month. He had been ill for a year. He was the last living charter member of the Akron lodge. Loyal Order of Moose, which he organized while he was chief clerk at the old Empire House which stood on the present site of the Portage Hotel before he transferred to the Buchtel. Eight years ago he began a brief and, for him, tragic reunion with the old Buchtel, which stood where the WADC building now is at Main and Mill sts. He returned as manager of the aging hostelry after an absence of more than 30 years. As chief clerk of the old Buchtel shortly after the turn of the century, John Sieber, tall and dignified, had stood in the ornate lobby and welcomed many notables. Lillian Russell had swept into that lobby with all of her beauty and charm. Jim Jeffries had stopped there in 1910. When Bob Fitzsimmons, king of the heavyweights, came to Akron with his own theater road show, he stayed at the Buchtel. John Sieber had opened the old Buchtel register to such theater greats of the day as Lotta Crabtree; Robert Downing, the tragedian, arul George C. Miln, the Chicago Methodist preacher who traded the pulpit for the stage. Presidents McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt were guests of the house. A wooden frame viaduct, long since gone, connected the hotel with its ballroom, directly across Mill st. Many were the gay parties there, livened by the concoctions of white-coated bartenders in the big mahogany barroom. Familiar local figures in John Sieber's lobby included O. C. Barber, the match king who founded Barberton; A. H. Noah, young rubber industry magnate; J. H. Andrews, general manager of the Quaker Oats Co.; Sen. George W. Crouse, and many others. In 1909, Ila Forney, a pretty, dark-eyed brunet from Barberton, set up manicurist's stand in John Sieber's tiled lobby and he found frequent occasions to desert his desk and chat with her. They were married in 1910. On one occasion an elegantly dressed traveling salesman, anxious to let small town Akron know that a big-timer was among them, registered at the Buchtel. While Mr. Sieber looked on, the salesman signed his name with a flourish and then, in letters large enough for all to see, added his address 'New York.' Mr. Sieber handled him characteristically and, it is said, very effectively. 'New York, eh,' he remarked, cocking a jaunty eyebrow at the salesman. 'Who's running the hotel there now.' Thirty-two years after their marriage and following 25 years of absence from Akron, Mr. and Mrs. Sieber returned to the old Buchtel -she to help him manage it - in 1942 Time had taken its toll of the once grand old hostelry. War workers, mainly Interested in a place to sleep, and old people forced to watch their pennies, trod its dingy lobby now. Gone were the top hats, the liveried footman, the rich red carpet. 'There isn't anything wrong that soap and water and paint can't cure,' John Sieber told a friend valiantly. He and Mrs. Sieber went to work. But in July, 1944, fire drove 40 guests from their rooms. The blaze was checked without serious damage but City Hall cracked down and a few months later condemned the old Buchtel. The owner of the building ordered Mr. Sieber to evacuate his guests by March 5, 1945."

[59904] "The Bangor Daily News [Banor, Maine]," 16 July 2025: "Jonesport and Ellsworth - Winifred 'Winkie' Dorothy (Steele) Peabody passed away peacefully, July 13, 2025, at an Ellsworth nursing facility. She was born to Sewall and Ruth (Norton) Steele October 29, 1931, in Addison, Maine. Winkie grew up in Milbridge. As an adult she and Wayne built their home together in Jonesport, piece by piece. She was a member of the Jonesport Wesleyan Church for many years, where she taught Bible School. She enjoyed camping with family at Parks Pond in Clifton for many years. Winifred worked in the nursing home in Jonesport for twelve years, and then did home healthcare for two years before retiring. She also worked packing sardines, raking blueberries, making wreaths, and sewing for others in her spare time. She picked crab meat, peeled shrimp, and shucked clams, as well as worked for 3 Rivers as a fish processor for about six years. Winkie loved to watch and identify birds with Wayne on their property in Jonesport. Winifred was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Clifton and Goodwin; three sisters, Bernice, Glenda, and Maybelle; two sons, William and Robert Fraser; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Fraser; grandson, Joshua Peabody; and her husband of sixty-five years, Wayne Peabody. She is survived by son, Lawrence Fraser of Cathedral City, California; daughter-in-law, Nancy Fraser of Woburn, Massachusetts; son, Stephen Peabody and wife, Margaret, of Addison; son, Timothy Peabody and wife, Annette, of Jonesport; stepson, Dana Peabody and wife, Carol, of Columbia Falls; and thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren."
