[54415] Find A Grave memorial 245281179 offers: "Son of James and 2nd wife Clarissa (Fickett) Carlow of Harrington born in Perry and Harrington Maine. Webster's birth was recorded in Harrington and in Perry. He married Nancy Noble December 20,1848 in Calais. Children were: Sarah Emma, Franklin M., Laura E., Frederick H., Nellie Gertrude, Mary S., Charles Edgar and Webster F. In the 1860 census Willard and Nancy were in Calais (5th Ward) with children Sarah E. then age 5 and Frederick H. age 3. By 1870 they had added Nellie, Mary, Webster and Charles age to the census and enumerated Laura E. then age 14. In 1900 Willard was 78 and Nancy 72 and in the household with them were grandchildren Millred age 13 and George age 8. Willard was still farming. In 1910 his son Webster then age 44 resided with him and was working the family farm along with grandson George. Willard died at age 93 from myocarditis and old age, a farmer, in Calais. Place of burial was Red Beach, Ernest G. Young & Co, undertakers, Calais. Nancy died in 1918.

DR. W. C. SMYDTH was born in Nicholas county, Kentucky, on the 16th day of July, 1816. He came to Monroe county, Indiana, with his father and family in October, 1818; was educated at the State University, at Bloomington, where he attended from 1834 to 1837, and studied medicine under Dr. W. C. Foster. He took his first course of lectures in the winter of 1839-40, at the Transylvania University, Kentucky. He practiced medicine at Ellettsville one year, in 1840. He moved to Bloomfield, Greene county, in 1841, where he practiced most of his time till 1851. During that year he attended a course of lectures at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he graduated in medicine. He settled in Worthington, Greene county, in June, 1853, where he has resided and practiced his profession most of the time since. In 1861, he was commissioned by Governor O. P. Morton, as surgeon of the 43d regiment of Indiana volunteers, in which capacity he served nearly one year, but had to resign, owing to ill health. When he first came to this county, there were not more than seven hundred voters. Most of the people lived in log cabins. Deer, turkeys and squirrels were very abundant. Hunting game was carried on by nearly all of the settlers, and wild meat was very plentiful. Nearly every body dressed in homespun garments. The cost of living was but little. He has lived to see the population increase to over five thousand voters. Large farms and handsome houses have been made all over the county. Schoolhouses have been erected in every district in each township. The rising generation now have the means of acquiring a liberal education.
