"The News [Newport, Pennsylvania], 18 February 1888," p. 2: "Samuel Shumaker, Sr., died suddenly on Wednesday, at the residence of his son, David Shumaker, in Saville township. He was aged about 86 years. He had been ailing all winter, but was able to be about until within the last few days prior to his death. His son with whom he made his limine was in attendance at Mrs. Swartz's funeral, and when he returned home it was to find that his aged father had died in the meantime. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock next Sunday morning, interment to be at Loysviile. Deceased was the father of Dr. J. H. Shumaker, principal of the John I. Blair Institute, at Blairstown, N. J.; Samuel Shumaker, of York, Pa.; William Shumaker, of Tyrone township, and David Shumaker. Also of Mrs. Emanuel Moyer, of Juniata county, and Mrs. Kerr."
