"News-Journal [Mansfield, Ohio], 8 August 1938," p. 9: "The victim of a heart attack believed to have been caused by the heat as he helped a neighbor thresh, Charles Garverick, 64, Johnsville farmer, dropped dead Saturday afternoon. Mr. Garverick had been operating a steam threshing machine which he owned, at the farm of Steele Baker, adjoining his own farm, when he was stricken. Born in Morrow county, Mr. Garverick had lived near Johnsville for 30 years. He was the father of eight children. Surviving are his wife, Edith; one daughter, Mrs. Gar Smith, Mt. Gilead; seven sons, Irvin, Mt. Gilead, Orie, Crestline, Ray, Ashland, Calvin, Ottawa, Meryl, Johnsville, Beryl, Cleveland, and Wade, at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Theron Texter of Lexington and Mrs. Great Smith of Mt. Gilead, and three brothers, Albert, Newton and Glenn Garverick, all of West Point, also survive, as do 14 grandchildren."

An associated file presents his obituary from the Pembrokeshire Herald & General Advertiser, 10 Dec 1900, which states John was "under-manager of the Bonvilles Court Colliery, Saundersfoot" where he had worked for 63 years - the cause of his death was listed as pneumonia, but a post-morten examination revealed "miners' disease" (i.e. black lung).
