"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 22 Septembe 2021": "Edith "Edie" Mason passed away in Gorham, Maine, on Monday, September 20, 2021, at the age of 88, following a brief illness. Edith was born in Sedgwick, Maine, on August 8, 1933, the daughter of Edgar and Amy Cousins and older sister of Sidney.
She graduated from South Portland High School, class of 1951, and then went on to graduate from the first class of the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in 1954. Her love for young people translated to her choice of work settings and she began her career in obstetrics and pediatrics at the Maine Medical Center. The latter years of her nursing career were spent working with college students at the University of Southern Maine Health services, Gorham campus, from which she retired in 1990. Edith married Richard Mason of Levant, Maine, on August 27, 1955, at Elm Street United Methodist Church in South Portland. They began their married life in South Portland before building a home on the Huston Road in Gorham in 1966, where they raised their family. Edith is survived by her loving husband, Richard, of 66 years. She is also survived by her brother, Sidney Cousins; her daughter, Meredith Koerner (William); daughter-in-law, Charlene Donahue; daughter, Lori McCarty (Tim); daughter, Wendy Carter (Tom); son, Richard Mason (Marie); daughter, Joellen Carroll (Bruce); her grandchildren, Amanda Koerner-Oakes (Ernie), Daniel Koerner (Heather), Brian Mason, Meghan Grassi (Vincent), Amy Holland (Doug), ENS Matthew McCarty, Isabel Stephens (Scott), Merejo Carter, Katrina Mason, Scott Mason, Tabor Carroll, and Kendra Carroll; and her great-grandchildren, Lucia, Augustine and Bosco Grassi, and Ronan Koerner. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Mason; and grandson, David Mason. As a young student, Edith was active in school plays, newspaper, yearbook and dance. As an adult, she became a voracious reader and enjoyed sewing, crafts, canning produce from their gardens, and especially looking after her husband, children and grandchildren. Her life was devoted to caring for others and she and Richard ultimately became parents of six children, all of whom now embody the values of selfless devotion to family, and to the Christian values of love, acceptance, honesty and integrity. Edith had a talent for making everyone feel loved and welcomed, and she embraced this ideal by planning many family and church gatherings and events. She was known for her delicious home cooking and her ability to organize a feast for the masses. She passed on her love of service to her children, who continue her legacy of devotion to family, church, and community.

[1698] Charles I, "king of Naples and Sicily and count of Anjou, was the seventh child of Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castile. ...one of the most powerful sovereigns of Europe... An extremely able soldier and a skillful statesman, his inordinate ambition and his cruelty created enemies on all sides, and led to the collapse of the edifice of dominion which he had raised." - Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1959 Ed., 5:277 (cf.16:81). He built the "New Castle" in Naples. See http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SICILY.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_I_of_Naples. She was born on August 7, 1935 in Madison County, WI to the late Ivan and Leola Straight also of Madison County. Norma was predeceased by her son, Frank; her brother and sister Joe Straight and Helen Straight; half-siblings Zelda Geiger and Bob Marvin; her brother-in-law?s Bob Grindle and Edward Tannehill; and sister-in-law's Jodi and Jeanette Grindle. Norma is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Franklin L. Grindle of Orland, Maine. She will be remembered by her eight loving sons: Gary and his significant other Nancy of Washington State; Arnold and his wife Pam of Orland; Ralph and his wife Ruth of Orland; Calvin and his wife Heather of Orland; Chris and his wife Deborah of Bucksport; Clayton and his significant other Jody of Orland and her children Olivia and Hannah; Anthony and his wife Debbie of Woolrich and her children Marco and Alicia; and Stewart and his wife Lisa of Orland. Norma will also be remembered by her brother Larry Straight and his wife Darice of Spokane, WA; her half-sister Eleanor Olson; her brother-in-law James Grindle of Bucksport; and her sister-in-law's Jane Tannehill and Alberta Whitney both of Orland. Norma and Franklin met in Spokane, WA in 1957 when Franklin was serving in the Army. They married in 1958 in Coeur d'Alene, ID, by Reverend Orland Scott. They subsequently relocated to Orland, Maine where together they raised 9 boys. Norma?s boys were her pride and joy as well as her full time job. A devoted mother, she was diligent in raising her boys to value hard work, rely on one another, come together to celebrate the good times, and support one another through difficult times. Norma will be remembered for her strong will, determination, and incredible work ethic. Some of her hobbies included enjoying her beautiful flower gardens, and playing many card games. Rumor has it solitaire was her favorite game to cheat at (despite her denial to this fact). Norma's family thanks Hospice employees Cindy Pelletier and Barbara Young."
