Virginia Horler's notes:
According to her death certificate, Anna Williams was born in 1850 in Bangor, Maine. Based on the 1850 Bangor Census, her father was Henry Clark Williams and her mother was Mary Jane (Burke) Williams. The 1851 Bangor Directory lists Henry Williams with a harness and trunk business at 2 Harlow's Block, East Market Square and a residence on Garland Lane.
Between 1851 and 1853 Henry, Mary Jane, and Anna moved to San Francisco, California. My examination of the ship arrivals reported by The Maritime Heritage Project in San Francisco indicates that the most likely arrival date was 15 September 1853 on the SS Sierra Nevada, captained by J. H. Blethen, 12 days from San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The passenger list includes Mr. H. Williams and Mrs. Williams and child.
Ann's sister, Sarah Elizabeth Williams, was born in San Francisco, California on March 13, 1854 (Sarah's Obituary).
Anna's parents were divorced while they lived in California. The San Francisco Call newspaper lists a divorce as follows: Plaintiff - Mary Jane Williams; Defendant - Henry C. Williams; Filed 03 Dec 1856; Granted 27 Jan 1857 in the 12th District Court.
Anna's father Henry is not listed in the Bangor, Maine Directories for 1855 and 1859, but father Henry and his two daughters (and maybe mother Sarah Jane?) had moved back to Penobscot County, Maine before the 1860 census.
In 1860 when Anna was 11 years old, the 1860 Census reveals that Anna's father was "idiotic" and that he had moved back to his parents' home in Bangor, Maine. The 1860 Census also shows that Anna and her sister, Sarah Elizabeth were living with their Mother's parents (Daniel and Sarah Burke) on their farm in Charleston, Penobscot, Maine, about 20 miles north of Bangor. In 1860 the Burke family consisted of Daniel and Sarah plus three of their own children living at home, including a daughter the same age as Anna (10 years old) plus Anna and her sister, Sarah Elizabet.
Anna's mother, Mary Jane, married for a second time to a Mr. Colcord. I do not have any more information about him, except that when Mary Jane married for the third time in 1867 in San Francisco she was named Mrs. Mary Jane Colcord.
In 1860 Anna's mother may have married Mr. Colcord or may have worked as a domestic in New Hampshire in Grafton County where she was raised? Based on Anna's death certificate, Anna moved back to California in 1862 at the age of 11-12 years, and I would think she moved back with her mother and sister.
On 10 Jul 1867 when Anna was almost 18 years old, her mother, Mary Jane, married her third husband, "Captain" Edward Wiard, in San Francisco, California. "Captain" Wiard, a former engineer on steamboats in Georgia, was a widower as the San Francisco Call newspaper index reported that Maria K. Wiard, wife of Edward Wiard, died 21 July 1864. I have no information on the death or divorce of Mary Jane's second husband, Mr. Colcord.
"Captain" Wiard moved to Alameda County in September, 1859, when he bought the place where he now resides, at the Oakland Trotting Park. The one hundred and fifty acres he then purchased, all of which he still owns, has located upon it the famous resort called Shell Mound Park, as well as the Oakland Trotting Park; while the principal portion of his property is laid out in gardens and rented, the picnic-grounds being leased to Captain L. Siebe, the track being under his own personal superintendence. Married in San Francisco, July 10, 1867, Mrs. Mary Jane Colcord, a native of Maine, and has one child, named George Edward Wiard." (History of Alameda County, California, Oakland, M.W. Wood Publ., 1883, p. 996, Transcribed by Kathy Sedler)
The Shellmound Park and Oakland Trotting Park were located in what is today part of the City of Emeryville between San Pablo Avenue and the shoreline. This site contained numerous shell mounds and an Ohlone Indian burial site.
The 1870 Census for Oakland, Alameda County, California (page 248) lists an A. M. Williams, Male (error), (18) born in Maine living with Ed Wiard (55) born in Connecticut , Mary J. Wiard (41) born in Maine, Ed Wiard, Jr., ( 2) born in California, and Elizabeth Williams (15) born in California. Further research tells me that this family is actually Edward Wiard, Mary Jane Burke Williams Wiard, Anna Marie Williams, Sarah Elizabeth Williams, and George Edward Wiard. (See death certificate of George P. Palmer who says his Mother's last name is Wiard and census for George Edward Wiard in Concord, Contra Costa, California showing that his full name is George Edward, mother born in Maine and father born in Connecticut.)
From 1867 when her mother married (Captain) Wiard until her own marriage to George M. Palmer, Anna lived with her mother and step father on the grounds of the Oakland Trotting Park. Her step-brother, George Wiard, born in 1872, related in 1960 that his mother ran a hotel at the trotting park in the 1870's. One of their famous guests was former President Ulysses S. Grant.
Anna married George M. Palmer about 1872-1873. George had been born in Bangor, Maine and had probably lived with his family in Woodstock, Carleton County, New Brunswick before returning to Bangor, Maine. Both of George's parents died in Woodstock. The Woodstock Journal reported in May 1864 the death of Sarah J. Palmer, relict of George F. Palmer, who left seven small children to mourn their loss. Anna's husband had been the eldest of the seven children, and he was an orphan at the age of 17.
George had moved to Alameda County, California in January 1867. George, who had been learning the harness business for 6 years, initially worked in that profession in Oakland.
From about 1877 to 1887 Anna's husband George worked as the manager of the Oakland Trotting Park. Anna's mother's husband, "Captain" Edward Wiard, was George's employer until "Captain" Wiard died in February 1886. George continued to manage the park for a few more years under Judge Mee, who had bought the mortgage and foreclosed on "Captain" Wiard.
In 1885 Anna's mother, Mary Jane, died at the age of 57 from malaria and typhoid.
In 1880, while Anna's husband was the Manager of the Oakland Trotting Park, the Census shows that in addition to their three oldest children, six grooms, a horse trainer and a jockey were also living in their home. Family residences included 1889, 662 Sycamore Street, 1892, 1517 Curtis Street; and 1896, 525-32nd Street. By 1897, George and Anna were living in different houses according to the Oakland Directory. The 1900 Census lists Anna as the head of her household with her sons Charles W., Howard and George P. living with her at a rented house at 525-32nd Street in Oakland, while her husband was living on Fruitvale Avenue at Pleasant Street. In 1903, Anna moved with sons Charles W. and George P. to 556-32nd Street. In 1918, Anna was living at 576-22nd Street.
Anna and George had four children in Oakland, the first, Neva, born on May 10, 1874. Their daughter, Laura (Neva) married at 18 in 1893 and Charles Wiard Palmer, their first son, died in 1902 at the age of 25.
Her grandson, Ken Palmer, remembers going occasionally with his family to his grandmother's home for dinner when she would invariably prepare leg of lamb. One one occasion, Ken's father, Howard, picked up the roasted leg of lamb his Mother had prepared and hurled it out the window, exclaiming that "he was sick and tired of having the same meal every time he came for dinner."
In 1910 Anna M. Palmer (59) stated incorrectly that she was a widow. She lived with her youngest son, George P. Palmer (30) at 556 - 32nd Street between Elm and Telegraph. (ED 95 page 162B)
By 1920, Anna was living with her daughter, Neva, and Neva's husband and daughter in Berkeley. Although the Census lists Anna as a widow, George, who was living in San Leandro, did not die until 1922.
Anna had her first stroke in about 1928 and went to live as a boarder with a woman doctor at 440 - 66th Street in Oakland for five years until her death at age 82 years, 6 months, 9 days on 19 February 1933. She was buried at Mt. View Cemetery in Oakland.
February 20, 1933, Oakland Tribune, page 23: "PALMER - - February 19, 1933, Mrs. Annie Marie Palmer, loving mother of Mrs. Laura Neva Smith, Howard H. and George P. Palmer; a native of Maine, aged 83 years. Funeral services Tuesday, February 21, 1933 at 2 0'clock p.m. from the Merit Mortuary, 1935 Webster Street."
Neither grandchildren Ken Palmer nor Jeanne (Palmer) Lovejoy remembered seeing their grandmother in her last years.
I have looked both a County of Alameda microfilm and in the DAR records in Sacramento for Alameda County and cannot find a record of this marriage, which would most likely of taken place in California as both persons were living in Alameda County in 1870. Also, Anna's mother, Mary Jane Burke Williams Wiard was living in Alameda County.
