Hugh was born June 28, 1943, the only child of Aldebert W. and Muriel F. (Boyd) Hooper of South Gouldsboro. Hugh grew up in South Gouldsboro and worked with his father as a stone mason throughout his childhood and teenage years. He graduated from Sumner Memorial High School at the age of 16 and earned his bachelorÂ’s degree from Husson College in 1963. Hugh worked for the Earl B. Tracy & Sons Insurance, before pursuing his career with the State of Maine Department of Human Services, where he began as a social worker, and later retired as an administrative law hearings officer, fulfilling a 46-year career."

Her obituary includes: "Betty worked at Sylvania in Brookville, as a waitress at Ruth & Harry's Restaurant in Punxsutawney, and also as a caregiver and nurse's aid at Blose-McGregor Nursing Home in Punxsutawney. She was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church, and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking and especially her family, whom she loved very much. In addition to her husband, surviving relatives include one son, Tim Myers (Jane) of Punxsutawney; one son-in-law, Doug Powell of Mayport; one brother, Jim Shaffer (Darlene) of Oliveburg; two sisters, Pauline Hartman of Tamarac, Fla., and Willavene Dobson of New Castle, Pa.; three grandchildren, Erica Mingle (Ed) of Punxsutawney, Marci Reitz (Adam) of Mayport, and Charley Powell (Jaci) of Mayport; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Chuck Myers; and a daughter, Roxie Powell."
