[53987] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 28 Novmber 1994, p. 12: "Vassalboro - Allen S. Gray, 69, a resident of the Stanley Hill Road, died Sunday morning, Nov. 27, 1994 at his residence. He was born in Wesley Nov. 28, 1924, the son of Roger and Minerva (Sharman) Gray. Allen attended Wesley schools and graduated from Washington Academy in East Machias. He also was a graduate of Washington State Normal School, now the University of Maine in Machias. He later received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono. In 1948 he married the former Prudence Bartley of Westfield. He had been a resident of East Vassalboro since 1949 and was employed as a principal at the elementary school in North Vassalboro and later at Winslow's Boston Avenue school and Garand St. School. He was then employed as a salesman for seven years by Sunshine Biscuits in the Waterville area. In 1965 he returned to teaching and became principal of Pleasant Street School in Waterville, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Maine Principal's Association, the National Education Association, the Vassalboro United Methodist Church, Vassalboro Grange and the Vassalboro Masonic Lodge, of which he was a past master. He had served on the Vassalboro Town Budget Committee and the Vassalboro School Board. He was instrumental in starting the Wesley Historical Scoeity. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army in the Pacific area. He is survived by his mother ,Minerva Gray of East Vassalboro; his wife, Prudence Gray of East Vassalboro; two sons, Gary Gray of East Vassalboro and Douglas Gray of East Vassalboro; two daughters, Ann Gray-Clark and Lynne Gray, both of East Vassalboro; two brothers, James Gray of North Vassalboro and Austin Gray of Wesley; two sisters, Maxine Robbins of East Vassalboro and Agnes Diffin of Robbinston; five grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, and Erin Gray, Travis and Sarah Clark; several nieces and nephews. . . . Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery in East Vassalboro."

Mr. Rice was a son of the late James H. Rice and wife, and was born in this township. Mr. Rice was one of the successful farmers of Blain where he has lived for a number of years and owned and operated two fine farms. He was a member of Mt. Dempsey Lodge, I. O. O. F., Landisburg, the Moose Lodge of Millerstown, was a past president of the Blain Lions Club and Fire Company. He was a member of the board of directors of the Landisburg Bank, trustee of the Zion Lutheran Church of Blain. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Zimmerman Rice; two sons, Frank and Nevin, both of Blain; two daughters, Mrs. John Adams, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. John Bock, of Blain; two brothers, William, of Duncannon, and Clark B., of New Bloomfield, R. He was son of Maol Iosa II of Strathearn and his second wife Matilda of Orkney and Caithness, herself daughter of Gilbert, jarl of Orkney, mormaer of Caithness. Through his mother, he descended from a line of Norse jarls of Orkney. Maol Íosa helped to keep the Kingdom of Scotland stable after the death of King Alexander II, and in an example of his behaviour, he is recorded a levying the tenants of the land belonging to Inchaffray Abbey to help preserve the peace. His marriage into the Comyn family put him very much in the House of Balliol camp during the Great Cause, and in fact Maol Íosa was the auditor of John Balliol at the gathering of Norham. Maol Íosa promised allegiance to King Edward I of England at Stirling in 1292, but rebelled against him along with John Balliol in 1296, and again later during the revolt of Andrew de Moravia and William Wallace. On both occasions, Edward I forgave him, partly one supposes because initially Maol Íosa helped Edward, turning over the rebellious leader of Clann MacDuib. After the Rising of Robert de Brus, Maol Íosa attempted steer a middle course, but the English king did not trust him, and he was in English custody until 1310. After his release, Maol Íosa remained loyal to the English King (now Edward II), and assisted the English defence of Perth in 1313. He was captured by his son, Maol Íosa IV. His son obviously persuaded King Robert to spare the father's life, but Maol Íosa nevertheless died in 1317."
