[42014] Find A Grave Memorial 35605167 offers: "James was born in Virginia. His parents reportedly were also natives of Virginia but he is of Irish descent. James and Elizabeth married by 1834. Their first three children were born in Ohio. By 1840 the family was in Farmington, Illinois where the rest of their children were born--eight children altogether. He engaged in farming, was a cooper and a member of the militia. There is a plaque on his grave that identifies James from Illinois as a 1st Lt. for the US Colored Troops. Unfortunately, after much research, it has been determinedd this information is incorrect for this James Collins. There was another James Collins who holds this honor. Between 1865 and 1868 James and Elizabeth, and at least three of their children moved to Spring Creek, Nebraska. James retired from farming and moved to Tecumseh where he and Elizabeth spent the rest of their lives." Ancestry.com offers: "Collins Name Meaning - Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Coileáin and Mac Coileáin (see Cullen). English: patronymic from the Middle English personal name Col(l)in, a pet form of Coll, itself a short form of Nicholas. Americanized form of French Colin."
