[1988] Frederick II died without male heir - Upper Lorraine (Lotharingia) was then restored to Gothelo. Frederick II's grandfather Frederick (d. 978) had received Upper Lorraine (roughly the ecclesiastical province of Trier) in 959; he was a member of the house of Ardenne and a relative of the Carolingians (although he deserted their cause), as he was a nephew of Otto and a brother-in-law of Hugh Capet.
