[54460] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 26 May 2020: "Surry - Wilbur Addison Saunders passed away at a local hospital on May 21, 2020. He was born at the Blue Hill Hospital at 8:45PM on May 17, 1933. The first month of his life was spent at his Aunt Ethel (Saunders) Torrey's home in Surry Village while his mother, Ethel (Davis) Saunders recovered at the hospital. During his youth, Wilbur was given the nickname Webb, and was known by this name during his life. He attended the Surry Village school, which has recently been remodeled back to the days he attended it in the 1940s. Wilbur was the only child of Ellis and Ethel Saunders and helped them work the family farm in Surry. He attended Ellsworth High School, graduating as Salutatorian in 1951. During his High School years, Wilbur and his Dad cut pulpwood on family land in Blue Hill at the head of Toddy Pond to fund his college education. Wilbur attended the newly created Maine Vocational Technical Institute, graduating in 1953 as Salutatorian of the first class. He received his draft notice during his final year at college for the Korean War conflict. After graduation from MVTI, Ellis took Wilbur down to a spring on the family land and told him to take a good long drink of water because there were to be days that he would wish he could have a drink of that water. Ellis' Dad had done the same thing when Ellis was drafted in 1918 before going to France during World War I. One week later, Wilbur left for Fort Dix in Virginia; the war ended during basic training. Upon completion of basic training in the US Army, he became an instructor in Diesel-Electric Locomotive repair at Fort Dix. In 1955 he returned home to Surry and began to work for the Maine Highway Commission, later the Maine Department of Transportation. He met the love of his life, Marjorie Mae Somers, in January 1957 at a dance in Orrington. He saw a red-haired young lady across the dance floor and asked her to dance. They connected instantly and were married on October 19, 1957. She gave him the nickname Bill, which her family called him during his life. Wilbur and Marjorie settled 'up the ridge' from his parents where they began to build their family. Wilbur worked long hours both with the MDOT and on the woodlot cutting pulp and spool wood with his Dad. They purchased a used 1956 John Deere 420 bulldozer to help on the woodlot and on road projects. Wilbur recalled the $90/month payment for 12 months was a struggle. Marjorie would put spare change in a coffee can to help pay for food and clothing for the growing family. By 1964, their family had grown to five children and Wilbur had been promoted to Foreman at the MDOT. He eventually was promoted to Supervisor for construction in Hancock and Washington Counties in 1969, a position he would keep until he retired in 1996. During the 1970s Wilbur became interested in the town government. He joined the newly formed Surry Planning Board and eventually became Chairman. During this time, he oversaw the creation of Shoreland Zoning and Subdivision ordinances for the Town. In 1980, he ran for the Board of Selectmen and became Chairman two years later. He remained on the Board of Selectmen until 2005. During his tenure, he was integral in getting the Town government to run more efficiently with an Administrative Assistant and helping upgrade the Fire Department to meet the needs of the future. Beginning in the 1960s and throughout their lives, he and Marjorie enjoyed working together on various organizations which included The Grange, Surry Civic Improvement Association, Surry Historical Society, Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation Committee and the Hancock County Republican Committee. They also enjoyed many trips to Canada, where Wilbur often took side trips to research his passion for ancestors with the Family Tree. Wilbur often referred to his family as his religion and his church was the family land. He loved to walk the land with his family; telling tales of his father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was proud of the fact that he walked in the footprints of three prior generations. In 1969, he purchased a Belsaw sawmill. He and his children cut trees for the sawmill and in 1973 began work on a family camp next to Sandy Brook in Surry. The camp was an ongoing project but was completed enough to allow overnight adventures by 1974. In 1990, he began work on a second camp in Blue Hill which he worked on and off with his family until it was completed in 1993. In 1989, he and Marjorie were invited on a trip to the Soviet Union as guests of the Surry Opera Company which included a week for a personal trip to Ireland. They also enjoyed many trips to Canada, where Wilbur often took side trips to research his family genealogy. Wilbur's wife, Marjorie, of nearly 62 years, predeceased him on August 19, 2019. He is survived by his sister-in-law Geneva Allen; and children Crystale Marie Casey, Patricia Lee Saunders, Ethel Marie Salinas, Wilbur Ellis Saunders and Mary Elizabeth Chace as well as 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren."
