Upon the close of the war the battery returned to San Francisco, but Capt. Steere remained and joined the 36th Regiment and was commissioned captain by President McKinley, and later became quartermaster of the regiment and distinguished himself according to the reports of Gen. McArthur. After the war he remained in government service and organized the revenue department of Manila, of which he is chief deputy. He is married, his wife being the former Etta Palmer, and they have three sons and two daughters, one attending the University of California: Thomas, Ruth, Ned, Jack and Julia H."
