The name Morell occurs in 1093 as of Bamburgh, the earls deputy, who killed Malcolm, king of Scots, and in 1095, as sheriff of Bamburgh and kinsman to Robert Mowbray, earl of Northumberland, when he was besieged by William Rufus. Morell for his gallant defence of Bamburgh, was received into the kings court and favour, but another account says he died in exile. It is probably through this match that North Middleton, Long Witton, and Shilvington came into the family." He was originally named Louis Philippe Marie Victor. At an early age he
entered the Belgian army. In 1876 Leopold organized an international
association to develop central Africa, and he later financed the
expedition (1879-84) to the Congo River led by the British-American
explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley. At the Berlin Conference of 1884-85,
Leopold was recognized as sovereign of the Congo Free State, annexed to
Belgium as the Belgian Congo in 1908, and now Zaire. Leopold incurred
widespread criticism for his exploitation of the Congo, and, because of
international protests, he was forced to institute reforms. He was
succeeded by his nephew Albert I.
