[399] William resided at Newbury, Mass. He and Joanna Lowell have ten children; he and Ann Parker had one child. William was first Captain of the Militia in Newbury. After Joanna died he moved to Boston and opened a business on Long Wharf; at the 50th anniversary Town Meeting of Boston held 14 May 1686 he opened and closed the exercises with prayer, although we do not know why he was selected for this role. The part of Bristol from which he emigrated lay south of the Avon River. He was one of the original party from England, and partner to Percival Lowle. - reference: "A Sketch of the History of Newbury, Newburyport and West Newbury from 1635 to 1845," by Joshua Coffin (Boston, 1845), p. 302. "Old Kittery and Her Families," Everett S. Stackpole (Lewiston, ME: 1903), p. 443: "Capt. William Gerrish was born in Bristol, England, 17 Aug. 1620. He came to America as early as 1639 and settled in Newbury, Mass. He married (1) 17 April 1645 Joanna, widow of John Oliver, who died 18 June 1677. He moved to Bostom and there married Ann, widow of John Manning. He died in Salem, 9 Aug. 1687." "Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families, 1620-1700", Frank R. Holmes, compiler (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2008), offers: "William [Gerrish], b. Bristol, Eng., 1617 or 1620; settled at Newbury, Mass., 1639; removed to Boston, Mass., 1678." See "The Descendants of Captain William Gerrish and Joanna Lowell", "The Descendants of Captain Walter Price and Elizabeth Gerrish," Douglass G. Adams, Robert T. Adams and Sara L. Adams (Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 2008), "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 185, and "Old Boston Families, Number Two - The Gerrish Family," Arthur Wentworth Hamilton Eaton (1913). Ancestry.com offers: "Gerrish Name Meaning - English: nickname for an unpredictable, wayward person, from Middle English gerysshe wild, changeable. Compare Geary. Possibly an altered spelling of German Gerisch, a variant of Giersch."
[40378] Find A Grave Memorial 29812308 offers: "Wife of Wilson Carpenter (1768 - 1855), Her Father is Alexander Grant (1758 - 1810), Her Mother is Abigail Unknown (1760 - 1832), Her Children are: Keziah (1797 - 1877), William (1799 - 1864), Giles J.
